Keen Demand For Choice Vegetables
Messrs. Townsend and Paul, Ltd., friiit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the last week, there has been a particularly keen demand for all choice llnes of vegetables. Accordin£ly," ceiling prices have been ruling for all controlled lines such as cabbage, carrots, kumeras, swedes, parshlps and silverbeet, while spinach, cauliflower and green peas are realising excellent figures. Increased supplies of tree tomatoes came to hand on Monday and values eased slightly,- while the demand ror'passion fruit, Chinese gooseberries and tomatoes is still particularly. keen. All citrus are realising" ceiling. With shorter supplies of flowers coming to hand, values have automatically increased. Lighter yardings -oi poultry than usual have ' been offered, " with values deflnitely increasing. There is a particularly good demand for all choice quality birds. Quotations are as follows:— - Fruit: Tomatoes, choice, 13s to 22s; others, 5s to 12s; passionfruit, 16s to 28s 6d; persimmons, 5s to 7s; chokos,,6s 6d to 7s 6d; tree tomatoes, choice, 10s to 13s 6d; others 9s; Chinese gooseberries, I6s to 30s per half case; choice grapes, 3s 6d to 4s 3d per lb.; Meyer lemons, sweet oranges, ceiling prices.; Flowers: Tangerine poppies, 4s 6d to 6s 6d; art poppies, 7s 6d to .11s; paper-white poppies, 5s 6d'to 6s per gross; carnations, 3s to 4s; violets, 4s to 9s ; chrysanthemums, 4s 6d to 26s- 6d per dozen bunches; .jerjca, is 3d to ls 9d per bunch. ' ' Vegetables; Artichokes, 8s to 10s per bag; beetroot, 8s to 12s; spmnach, 25s to 29s; rhubarb, 6s to 12s; lettuce, 6s to 14s, marrows, 3s to 5s per case; carrots, cabbage, kumeras, silverbeet, onlons, swedes, parsnips, ceiling prices; cauliflowiers, 15s to 24s; pumpkins, 5s to 14s per sa'ck; hothouse beans, 2s lOd; peas, lOd to ls 2d per lb. Poultry: White leghorn hens, 3s to 5s 4d; black orpington hens, 6s to 11s; white ducks, 7s to 14s; coloured ducks, 4s to 12s; geese, 7s to 9s; guinea fowls, 22s to 24s 6d each; turkeys, 2s to 2s 5d per lb.
