Britain Scraps Policy Of "Fly British"
LONDOX, June 1. Britain is to abandon its policy ot flviug "All British" aircraft on her air trunk routes. American Constellations bought from trish Airlines which has abandoned its projected trans-Atlantic service, are to be used on the Australian route and the Ilvthe fivinglioats will be withdrawn probably towards tlic end of this year. Jt is expected that the Government will buy DC4M air liners from Canada. The.v are knowi. as Canadair Four, are of American design but are being built in Canada under licence. They are powercd by British Kolls-Koyce ILerlin engines. The "Fly British" policy was follow ed to give Britain 's aircraft industry a chance to recover from its vvartim'c preoccupation with niilitary production lt lias not been successfui because titi interim types of British aircraft proved unecouumic and have attracled few passongers on the routes where othei opcrators have been usiug more modeni American airliners. lt is tiiought un likelv tliat the Fly British policv wili return before 1953 when the de ii.avil land C'omet, Bristol Brabazon and •Sauiiders-Roe flyingboat is expected ti. be readv for service. All three types will be jet propelled.
