Political Controversy May Become Racial
Reeeived yrondav, 7.10 p.m. LONDON, May 31. | It is possible to eonstrue Dr. Malan's Xationalist Party's victory, as an Afrikaner vote of no confiJenee in ttie Deputy Premier, irr. .Tan Hofmevr, ueeause the Nationalists, during the eampaign, put him u]> as a svnibol of that Jiberalism towards the natives which Afrikaners must unite to defeat, says The Times' Capetown eorrespondent. An unfortunate aspeet of the generai election results is that there is not a single Knglish member in the Nationaiist or Afrikaner Parties and that while it is niainly the Afrikaans speaking eountryside that eleeted the Nationalists. it was niainly the Knglish speaking eoastal towns whieh returned Unitted Partv members. This division will make it fatally easy for a normal poiitical eontroversv to beeome a raeiai controversy with sinister possibilities for tlie future.
