Britain Has Done All She Can For The Jews
Britain has done all she can for the Jews in Palestine. She has en'deavoured to the hesi of her ability to quell the trouble .which has broken out there, and now sne is getting aL the blame'for it. This ,is the cpmion of Mr. F. E. Cooper, a misslonary who has just returned from Palestine, and who was inter- , viewed last week in Otaki by a J "Chronicle" representative. Mr. Cooper, who has been in the Holy Land for some tlme, is convinced that the Jews are entireiy ungratefui for Britain 's efforts. to j maintam peace. "Firstiy, I would like to say that 'Britain has, I believe, done a grand job under very difficult, conditions," said Mr. Cooper. "But for her crushing of the Arab rebeLion in 1938, every Jew in Palestine woui'd have been wiped out. The British Government has honestly tried to . find a solution to the probiem. However, as far as 1 can see, there is no way out. Things , have beCome imposslbie." i Discussing the con'ditions de- ; manded by the Arabs before observing the cease-fire order, Mr. Cooper said l^hat these could not be carried out.". The first condition, i the dissolution of all Zionist groups in Palestine, woui'd never come 1 about because the' Zionist State was aiready established and proclaimea , in Palestine. ■ As for demanding the complete ending of immigration, ; there was no way m which this could be stopped. While he was in Palestine, Mr. Cooper said that he had seen the Jews use every means of entry into the country that was possible. Mr. Cooper described the American attitude to Britain in the Palestine issue as "unjust and unfair." As for the loan which America was considering granting to Israel, it was an indication of the trend ,of the minds of the people. For years Britain had been regarded by the Jews as Public Enemy No. 1. Britain had had all she could take, commented Mr. Cooper. She had been heroic in taking what she had, and he could not see that she , would be able to stand up to more trouble. Palestine in recent years had cost Hritain £100,000,000, so isay nothing of the 300 liv.es lost there. It was little wonder that she had withdrawn on the termination of her mandate.
