By nearly a two to one majority, the conference defeated ori a card vote a proposal that the expelled Commoner, Mr. J. F. Platts-Mills, be allowed to address the conference. Mr. Herbert Morrisqn to.ld the conference that the next election would be the "greatest fight of our lives. If we win, as I believe we will, the good work wfll go on. If we don't.win it may take us a long time to come -back.'.' .The conference will be watched with more than usual interest by the nation. The largest ever held, it comes at a ti'me when a spate of publicity has focused attention on the party's varjous domestic difficulties and dissensions, when expulsions and threat of expulsions cloud the air, when grave doubts are being raised about the efficiency . of nationalisation, and when some commentators have been emboldened to write about "the coming split" in the party.
