Crippled Ship Towed to Wellington
WELLINGTON, May 16. The crippled ship Port Waikat:;. towed by the Kamo, arrived at Wellington tonight from the Chathams. Cup tain C. A. Iveitli, master of the Pori Waikato, describing tlie lirst hours after disablement, said the shjp 's engines stopped with wire round the screw, at 5.3U 011 Wednesday morning, 30 miles west of the Chathams. In pitcli darkuess and with a full gale blowing tliev tried every way of clearing the scitw, without success. - With tlie heavy seas running the shiji's stern higli out of the water oue second and under water Ihe next, they tried puttiug a man over tlie side but it was useless. The situation looked doubtful but feelmgs were greatly relieved once they rigged a jurv sail. The ship made just enough head way to clear the reefs. Mr. J. R. Kennedy, vvho is in chargi; of public works construction in the Chathams, praised the seanianship oi the captain. Sig'ht of tlie trawlur Manuka waft a greht reljef to the pas sengers who, howev^er, took things vvell. Forty slieep died on the v-oyage.
