Jockey And Horse Trainer Fined For Theft
A licensed jockey and a licensed horse trainer appeared in the Magistrate's Court, Otaki, before Mr. H. J. Thompson, S.M., yesterday, on a charge of theft of five bags of oats valued at £9 15s. They were, Arthur Ernest Lord, jockey, of Otaki, and John Houlihan, horse trainer, also of Otaki. Both the defendanss elected to be dealt with summarily and pleaded guilty to the charge-. Evidence was given by Constable W. A. Calwell that he had interviewed both men who had at first denied the allegation. Later, they had admitted it and had described how Houlihan had borrowed a truck and taken the oats from the property of Mr. E. Goulden. They were both first offenders. Asked by Mr. Thompson if they had anything they wished to say, Lord said that it had been a foolhardy thing to do, but admitted that it was too late for regret. He 1 entered a plea for the suppression of his name giving the reason that he was a licensed jockey and that the publication of it would be detriimental to his livelihood. Houlihan jhad no comment to make. ; Mr. Thompson refused to grant 'the suppression, commenting that 'the theft seemed to be a deternraI ed one. Defendants were convicted land fined £5 each.
