AUCKLAND, May 9. A fatal fire occurred at Tirau this morning, the victims being: — Dead. Andrew Stewart, aged 83, farmer, of Tirau. Injured. Miss Daphne Holderness, ag'ed 17, severely burnt. "Mr. Stewart occupied ah eight-room-ed hpuse and with hira in the house were his wife, Mrs. Jessie Elizabetn Stewart, aged 86, who is a cripple, Mr. William James Bethell, a farmer, his wife atid two children, a housekeeper, Mrs. Dorothy Boucher Holderness and hor daughter Daphne. - . / . Mr. Bethell was awakeried' at 5 aim. to find the roof of the house*, on fire. 'He aroused all the occupants and he and' others got them " all out of the house. Unknown to Mr. -Bethell, Mr.' Stewart went back to retr.ieve somd oi his possessions and he was not missed for some tinie. In the moantime the house, which was nearly 70 years' old, be-came enveloped in flames when Miss Holderness ' went into the house and made a courageous attempt' to save Mr. Stewart she collapsed .as she was unable to get hini out. -Flames swept over her and she was severely burnt about the face, head and chost. The house and most of its cdntents were dostroyed. The eharred reinains of Mr. Stewart were reeovered later.
