Executed Greeks All Had A Fair Trial
Received Sunday, 7 p.m. * • ■ ATIIENS, May 9.11 Mr. Theus Rentis, former acting jMinister of .Tustice, said 157 persons were executed during the eight months Mr. Ladas, the assassinated .Minister of Justice, was in office. Air. Rentis added that there were 2900 persons under sentence of death in Greece. "In upholding the law We are assuming responsibility for preventing in Greece what liappened in Pales'tine," he said. Air. ATichael Ailianos, Greek Alinister _ of Information, eommenting on eriticism of the executions, said it was unjust to pretend that the recent executions resembled those which " often happen in totalitarian countries or countries ru» on Communist lines." Accused persons in Greece were tried publicly and'given all legal assistanee. "Recommendations to the Greek Government to stop the executions indicate ignorance of the fundamental principies of the Greek democratic reginie in which tlie judiciary is separate from the cxecutive, " 'he said. ''The Government is powerless to stop the' executions."
