Spectacular Blaze At Otaki Gorge
One. of the oldest homesteads m • ihe Otaki district 'was razed' to the around in a spectacular blaze last ciight. The home was the p'roperty of Mr, P. Shields, cif Otaki Gorge, and was situated .some seven miles from Otaki township. Fortunately it was unoccupied at the time, Mr.Shields having moved to another residence about a quarter of a mile from the scene of the bip^e. Mr> Shields had been doing si washing in the wash house or ole homestead ahd lt.is thought that the blaze .was' caused by embers from the • copper fire faliing. over the hearth. The flames were not noticed until about 8,30 p.m. . and by this.time the house was well alight. There was no water laid on to, the property and efforts to qu61 the flames were unavailing., . The property was valued at about £1000 ahd was cove/ed by insurance.
