Changed Views About Maoris In Australia

Received Thursday, 9.55 p.m. CANBERRA, Mav 6. No restrictions* of any kind \vill be placed by tlie Australian Governinent upon the entry into Australia' of Maoris. This undertaking ha's been communi cated to the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, by the Immigration Minister, Mr. Calwell. The question was raised recently m Parliament here when Mr. Calwell said Maoris would be treated in the same way as otlier Polynesians. This produced instant reaetion from New Zealand whose representatives compiained about such diserimination. It is understood that Mr. Calwell, in the communication to Mr. Fraser, has amended the previouslv expressed viewpoint and to have stated that Maoris can enter Australia on the same footing as otlier New Zealanders.
