"• WELLINGTON, May 5. The probable round-figure total of New Zealand dairy production for export in the 1947-48 season, would be 130,000 tons of butter and 80,000 tons of cheese, said Mr. William Marshall, chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Fioduee Marketing Coinmission "today. i. Mr. Marshall said that,* with the excepAon of .the .Norin Ahcklandvdistriet,,. . dairy' production ,in ..the j^e and. aptuninjha.d.been |ieapoIn.tingi, The , dry weather had eaused an unusuaiLy. ' rapid' .decline in ontput: everywhere except in North Aucldand and the Bay of Flenty. ' ' In consequence, earlier estimate.s of production will not be reafised," he said. '"We are now in the nirith month . pf the cxport season and productionwill be low over the.next three months. It is therefore possible to assess .fairly' closely the quantities available for export in the 1947-48 season. Theee quantities are estimated in rouhd ligures at 130,000 tons of butter as* against 125,000 tons iast season and 80', 000 tons of cheese. as against 82,000 tons last season. The decline in cheese is partly due to the diversion to casedn manufacture for the United Kingdpm Board of Trade. . Stated in round flgures, the production for export over the la,st three years has bgen as follo.ws:— . 1945-46: Butter 112,000 tons, cheese 86,00'0 tons. 1946-47 : Butter 125,000 tons, cheese 82,000 tons. • . 1947-48: Estimated butter.., 130,000; tons,' cheese 80,000 tong-.
