EMERGENCY MAYOR PROPOSED
Reeeived Wednesday, 10.25 p.m. NEW YOBK, May 5. The Trusteeship Council in a session lasting until 1 a.m., reeommended the naming of an emergeney "Mayor" to take over the xnuniciptfi functions of. the city of Jerusalem when the British mandate ends. This Mayor will have no offieial connection with United Nations. The Council, after defeating a New Zealand proposal to have a United Nations delegate take over the nxandatory authority in Jerusalem, adopted a Belgian resolution calling the atteixtion of the General Assembly to ' ' the necessity of providing for the custodv of the assets of the Government ot Palestine in Jerusalem and for the ellective maintenanee of law and order pending a linal setilement." No ttefinite proposal was made, however, for maintaining order. The resolution. adopted by a vote of 9 — 0 with Rxxssia and France al)staining, will be presented to a meeting of the General Assembly today. The vote on the New Zealand resolution was: — Eavouring, Australia, New Zealand, France and Russia; opposed, China, Iraq, United Htates, Mexico and the l'hilippines. Britain abstained.
