Theft Of Jewellery Charles Edwara Hynes, aged 26, labourer, was charged in the Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday with the theft of jeweliery valued about £1524, the property of an overseas visitor at a Wellington hotel. The owner of the property stated in evidence that jewellery to the value of some £600 hafi been removed. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Royal Visit Stamps Designs for a Royal visit series of postage stamps are to be invited by the Post Office and paymenr of up to £50 will be made for each accepted design, the PostmasterGeneral, Mr. Hackett, has announcedV The Royal visit set will be in the values of 2d, 3d, 5d and 8d. It is proposed that the stamps of the set be in two sizes 25mm. x 21mm. and 37mm. x 21mm. Tnese two sizes are exemplified in the current one shilling King George VI stamp and Otago Centennial stamps. Dairy Factories Closed The 'dry summer and accompanying drought conditions hau forced some dairy factories in the Wellington district to close down, said a member of the New Zealand Dairy Board, Mr. A. Linton, at the central ward conference of the board in Palmerston • North this week. Most..of the miik was being directed to the Wellington city supply and very little cheese had been made in the province duripg the last three months. N.Z. Apples In London Unloading 'began in London on May 4 of 79,228 cases of New 2euland apples. from the Royal- Stur. It is the first shipment of New Zealand's fiyst substantial postwar apple export ^eason,. ~ Further shipments are expecte'd soon. Apple exports to the United Kangdom in 1948 ate expdcted to total l,OOQ,OQO bushels, compared with neariy 2,000,000 bushels in a normai .prewar season. The shipping shortage kept the 1947 • exports to g,n almost negligible quantity. Wairarapa Railcar Service The eliminatio'n of the tri-weekly express to and . from Wairarapa and the establishment of a daily railcar service is filling a long-felt need in railway servlces from Palmerston North. In addition, a daily railcar leaves Masterton at 8.23 a.m. anfi qrrives at Palmerston North at 10.30, returning at 10.55 for Wellington where it arrives at 3.15 p.m. Tfiis service replaces the normai expresses. These' new railcar services run in addition to. the normai railcars.
