Ngauruhoe's Vent Enlarged Considerably
AUCKLAND, May J. Hvplosions in ihe crater of Mount Ngauruhoe are helieved to have enlarged eonsiderahly the vent from which the mountain had been pouring out alrnosl a eontinuous steam and ash coluinn sinee Friday evening. The Governinent vulcanologist at Rotorua, Mr. .1. Ifealy, formed this opinion after. a iliglit over the crater tolay. lt appeared, lie said. that sinee the crater was inspected yesterday, tlie steam vent h:ui grown several tiines its size and now oceupied a nuich greater area of ihe western corner of the crater tlian lrefore. Wliile the aireraft circled the mountain today regular explosive emmsions of asli continued. Mr. Healy was tlown past the western crater rixn and had a view of the vent in which he could see no sign of lava. Although calculations must neeessarilv he only very approxiniate, it has heen estimated that Xgauruhoe' is blowing out ash at the rate of at least 10(1 tons a minute. I.atest report tonight indicate that the explosions' are less severn.
