AUCKLAND, April 30. Sending«a column of steam, fisk and rock to a height of about 1000 feet Ngauruhoe became active today for the lirst time in- more tlmn 20 years. A message from the Herald 's eorrespondent at Taupo said the tirst signs of the eruption cam e just before si\ o'clock when large volumes of what : appehred to be a-sli-laden steam were hurled into the air, it rose for a grear height and conlinued to pour from the cone until it was obscured at dusk. Lator darlc clouds obscured the view from Taupo but the activity still continueJ at a late hour.
