Received Friday, 9.45 a.m. _ JERUSALEM, April 29. The British. authorities. have effeced a temporary cease^ fire agreement between the Jews .and Arabs at Jaffa and fighting there has ceased. Both Jaffa and Tel Aviv are quiet for the first time in four days. The British military commander at Jaffa ordered the cease fire after a warning to the Jewish Agency by the Palestine Government. The mayor of Tel Aviv said that both sides had accepted the agreement not to fire fior a period oi 18 hours.
The agyeement resulted from British mediation- after concentrated British artillery had carried out ^'softening up" and after Royal Air Force Spitfires had staged a demonstration over Jaffa. Both Irgun and Haganah forces accepted the agreement which will last until 0900 hours tomorrow, local time, and withdrew to the Arab Manshieh quarter which is along the waterfront and separates Jaffa and Tel Aviv. The Arabs, b.efo're agreeing to the cease fire, stipulated that the Jews must not advance beyond the Manshieh quarter. It is officially stated that further round-table talks will be held tomorrow.
