Annual Meeting Of Plunket Society

• Mr.s. L. W. Wilson presided at the ' annual meeting of the Shannon sub-branch of the Plunket Society when, besides the committee,- the following members from the "Levin branch were present: Mesdames L. ' J. Hunter (president), H. S. Walkley (secretary), A. Dv Sutton ftreasurer), W., S. Long, W. C. Stannard, J. H. Holdaway, and F. D. Chainey. - : The annual o report stated that steady progress had been made, the flhances were in a satisfactory condition and the financial membdrship remained the same as last year. "To increase the funds the annual . dance was held and £20 raise'd. A street stall was the means of raising a further £35 9s 3d. New scales were bought for £29 13s, and the old scales sold for £10. Dr. J. Wilsojn, who was renting the Plunket rooms daily excepting Thursday, vacated them on June 1 and since that date the rooms have been used only by the Plunket nurse on Thursday of each week." Nurse Hight reported for the year emded December 31, 1947, that the number of new babies for the year was 28, 86 visits had been made to homes, 671 babies had come to the rooms and 38 pre-school children. • The attendance during the year showed an increase of 461, the highest for three years. . "Young> mothers need to be encouraged to scontinue nursing their babies, as " breast-fed babies have mor,e resistance to disease," continued Miss Hight. "Mothers should be encouraged to do their best' to raise strong healthy children in a happy home. Unhappy homes are the highest cause of malnutrition in children, the second being lack of rest. Owing to the poliomyelitis outbreak visits have only been made by appointment, and this aj'rangement ls being continued." Thanks were expressed to Nurse Hight for her efflcient and con- • scientious work during the y.ear, Miss E. Roach for providing lunch for the Plunket nurse every week, Mr. C. M. Cronquest for auditing the books, "The Chronicle" for favours and assistance ffiven, Mrs. Hyde for alloWing the use of the screen for advertising, and the mothers and residents of Shannon and district for the generous response to appeals made during ' the past year. showed that both the general and Karitane accounts had credit balances. Mrs. J. A. Easton, on behalf of the committee, extended thanks to Mrs. L. W. Wilson for her report and to Mrs. W. It was decided ' that the next meeting day wotild be May 3 and that an insurance policy be taken out to cover casual labour .employed in cleaning the rooms and keeping the grounds in order.
