Lewis Fined; Gaol Threat Remains

Received Wednesday, 10 a.m. WASHINGTON, April 20. John L. Lewis, president of the United Mineworkers' Association, was today fined 20,000 dollars and his United Mineworkers.' Union 1,400,000 dollars for contempt of cburt in ignoring an order to. «top the miners' strike. Judge T. Alan Goldsborough accepted a Gavernment recommendation for fines, saying that it had been his own inclination to send Lewis ta gaol. The threat still hangs over Lewis, as the Judge imposed fines only on the criminal contempt charge, and said he would act cm April 23 on the second conviction for civil contempt. Lewis and the unioh apnounced that they would appeal.
