Levin Tennis Club Closes Successful Season
Pine weather prevailed on Saturday when the Levin Lawn Tennis Club held its offleial closing eeremony and presentation of trophies at the courts. Keen interest was taken in the day's doubles tournament, which hegan at 10 a.m. and continued throughout the day, the fin'al game being played almost in the dark. Players participated from the Weraroa and St. Joseph's clubs. The winners were Miss K: McLean (24) 1, and Miss B. Ho'oker, Miss R. Williams and Mrs. Rathbone (23 each3 2 in the ladies' section and M. V. Fox (23) 1 and R. Stantial (23) 2 in the men. The possible score was 24. In the men's section both Fox and Stantial scored ,23, but in a play-off Fox and R. Antcliffe beat Stantial and Atkinson 6—3. During the afternoon tea adjournment the presentation of trophies was made. The" president, Dr. S. J. Thompson, said that the club had had one of the best tennis seasons for some years.. .Enthusiasm had been maintained throughout the season and the committee had done a good job of work. He felt he must emphasise the amount of time and the effort made by the club captain, Mr. P. Nichol. The service he had rendered throughout the year had been given cheerfully and well. It was a most difficult job and one which called for a great deal of sacrifice of play and time. Dr. Thompson then called on the club patron, Professor F. P. Wilson, to make the presentation of trophies and declare the season closed. In declaring the season closed, Professor Wilson extended his best wishes to the members for next season and said he hoped that those who played through the winter" would benefit from it and double their prospects for tournament play next season. Trophies were presented as follows:— Donvan Cup, men's handicap singles: H. Benning; Thompson trophy, ladies' handicap singles: Miss Mary Karauti; captain's prize, ladies' handicap doubles: Misses S. Cameron and N. Mulcahy; vicepresidents prize, combined handicap doubles: H. Benning and Mrs. Porter; captain's trophy: Men, R. Desgrande; ladies, Mrs. Greenaway; president's trophy: Men, R. Desgrande; ladies, Mrs. Antcliffe; special prize for runner-up in both captain's and president's trophy competitions : Miss N. Hall.
