Received Sunday, 7 p.m. MELBOURNE, April LS. A mob of 200 hrutallv kicived and liashed a constable outside tlie Soutli Melbourne football ground when two plain clothes constables were endeav"ouring to arrest suspeeted pickpockets. Constable James Mcllwaine, aged kd, was treated later for lacerations and abrasions. Tlie constables arrested the suspects when boarding a tram after a Leaguo football match. The suspects shoutcd fo'r help to the crowd leaving the gates and inimediatCly the crowd swarmod about the policemen, knocking Constable Mcllwaine down and helping one suspec-t to escape. j Fighting his way to his feet Constable Mcllwaine saw the suspect boaru a, citv bound tram. He gave chase, boarded the rear of the tram and ar rested the man when the tram rcached the city. The other man wa!s held until police reinforeements arrived.
