And The Rains Came...
It is a long time since farmers looked more anxiously at the skies than they did this weekend. With paddocks parched and water in the tanks at a dangerously low level, it was evident that unless quick relief came the district would be facing one of the worst droughts in its history. Early on Sunday morning the first few drops of rain since a light shower the. previous Saturday began to fall, developing into. a steady drizzle, which unfortunately . was not 'of long duration. Last night showers- were again experienced and early this morning furthei more substantial falls were registered. The rain continued intermittently throughout the day. Little more than half an inch has fallen in Levin and district during the month, according to Mr. H. Harvey, Senr., of Cambridge Street. On Saturday night 18 points of rain were registered by him anc up to 7 a.m. this morning six points had been recorded for last night. To 11 a.m. today 27 points had fallen. The total for the month is now 54- points.
