TRAGIC END TO PARTY
■■■■■■■ Infant Drowned in Sump On Levin Farm Preparations for a birthday party on a. Levin farm on Satprday afternoon were fetit short in tragic circumstances when the 20 months' old baby of the property owner. was drowned in a sump adjaceht the cow bails. The child was Donald Joseph Majcolm, son .of Mr. Finlay Oliver Malcolm, farmer, of Arapaepae Road. With the tables laid out in readiness for the party, some of the youngsters attending the celebrations expressed a wish to see the pig sties ahd cow bails. They Were takeh pn a tour of the farm buildings. by a sinai! girl and the infant son of the owner accompanied them. Near the Cow bails was a newly-dug sump, which had. not yet been boarded in. The" infant was not immediately missed and when: the , father made a seareh he scooped the sump with a pitchfofk and discovered the body of his baby. ' Dr. Gillies, of Levin, was called and when he arrived the fatherwas applying artificial respiration, but life was extinct. An inqUest Was opened on the farm for identification purposes on Saturday afternoon before the district coroner, Mr. J. S. Moir,- and adjourned sine die.
