Barelv 24 hours later than the esti mated timo the bridging of the washed out gap in the Gisborne- Wairoa railway at the entrance to Tikiwhata tunnel was completed late this afternoon iu timo for the express to traverse it to night. The construction of a (idf; trestle bridge has been a higli speed job in which 50 to (50 mpn in bridging and track repairing gangs worked i:. shifts night and dav under particularlv arcluous conditions in the, last tliree days of biting winds and heavy rain sipialls. The work was done under the direc fion of .Air. K. Simmers, pistrict Civil Kngineer of the Railways Department, Wellington, whose original estiinate of the eom])letion of the bridging bv Thursday night was only 24 hours out due uiainlv to severe weather conditions. The (fisborne railway staff did an e\-eelleiit job during the week of the suspensioii of the train service by handling all passenger and freight, iuelnding jierisliable goods; by buses and lorries.
