WELLINGTON, April 8. "J; If the Japantse had landed iri New Zealand during the course oi the war, their choice of beer and hotel accommcdation would have oeen strictly limited. . Early in the war New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., made plans for the demolition oi hotels and breweries- in the event of invasion.. - This was stated in evidenpe by Mr. L. G. Piper, manager of the Wellington branch of the firm, before the Land Saies Committee yesterday. Mr. Piper was explainLng why his firm had not taken | advantage of the chance sweral [ years ago to buy property they now wante'd. Ptans then, said Mr. Piper, were inot for expansion but for possible 1 demolition. j Application was made yesterday : for "approval of the price of £20,000 I for Ihe adjoining property north of- , the Royal Hotel, Lambtori Quay. ; Mr. Pipei* said it was planned eventually to builcl a modern residential hotel on the site of the present Royal Hotel to replace the Occidental Hotel, also in. Lambton Quay, on the s|te of which the Gov5 ernment proposcd to erect the new Public Trust Buil'ding. . Decision was reserved.
