Successful School Fair
The excellent attehdahbe of the public .of Shannon and district, enthusiasti'c support of the parents and children aiid. much hard "work on'the part of the school committee and teaching staff, combined with favourable weather to make the school fair. held in the school grounds last Friday, an unqualified success. The gross takings exceeded £125. For some time the children had been saving their pocket money, and their spending contrib.uted consider^bly towards the day's receipts. The most popular stall with the young folk was that supplying ice creams and soft drinks, at which 27 dozen of the latter were sold. The stall which proved the most profitable duriner the day was that selling produce, while 'the jumble stall also proved popular and profitable. The team rooms were tastefully arranged and decorated by the senior girls who also acted as very efficient and courteous waitresses. Entertainment abounded in the form of competitions and a. miniature golf course." Some very enterprising pupils sold pony and horse rides to their fellow pupils, and such was the demand for this experience that it became necessary lat,e in the afternoon to mount two at a time in order to avoid disappointing the long queues. At a suitable interval in the afternoon's proceedings, the opportunity was taken by the headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, to extend thanks to the committee, the public and the children, and to all who had contributed, towards the . successful 'day. Mr. Burtt mentioned the fact that the elfort of the children would give them a greater appreciation of the value of what the proceeds produced for them at school. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. A. E. Jeffrey, after thanking the public for their support; complimented those responsible for the smooth organisation, and referred to the necessity for establishing a modern -libf ary in the school.
