TAXES ON CIGARETTES AND LIQUOR RAISED
I Received Wednesday, 10 a.m. | LONDON, April 6. 1 Presenting his Bu'dget and j economic survey in the House of Commons today, Sir Stafford Crippi announced increases of ld per pint on beer, 28d on a bottle of whisky, £1 a gallon on all spirits except perfumed spirits, ls a bottle on foreign heavy wines and 6d a bottle I on light wines. The duty 011 Empire j wines is unchanged. I Cigarettes are up from 40d to 42'd ! for a packet of 20. I The tax on football and similar j pools is raised from 10 to 20 per ; cent. | Bcokmrk°rs on dog courses will : pay a graduatcd licence duty on ! each meeting. | The re-elas-uficatian of the purI chase tax means that the tax on a large number of articles will be j reduced f''om 50 to 33 1-3 per cent. j The overall effect of the purchase I tax changes will be to reduce price - | generally by 10 per cent. The re- | duction will be worth £500.000.000. . A capital levy is impracticable at present.
