James Galloway, ihe Whangarei professional, who yesterday won £150 for iinishing first in the medal championshij), was defeated in the first round by the veteran Wellington professional J. Lainbie, and Weir, who iinished fifth in the professional medal event, was beaten on tlu; last green by A. H. Dyke, of Napier. Kven more sensational was the faiiure of N. 11. Uuller, the Russley professional, to sink a putt of about 15 irielies for a win at the 19th, against A. ALurray, the New Zealand professional chumpion. Alurray flnally won the match at the 22nd hole when he sank a iive-footer for a birdie three. In the umateurs, two of New Zealaiid's best known players, D. L. Woonj N'ew ZeaJand representative last year, and A. It. Kitto, twice runner-up fox ihe national amatehr erown, were defealed in the first round. Woon fell an easy victim to L. B. Johnston, Akarana Clnb champion who headed the amateurs in Ihe medal event, and Kittc also wont out to the young player, G. R. Tyndall, of Manukau (Auckland) Club.
