Queen Anne's Bounty Comes To An End
LONDON, April 1. Queen Anne's bounty, the special fund established by Queen Anne 24-i years ago for the benolit of poor clergy 01 the Churcli of England, came to au end to-day and ttfe £70,000,000 in reserves whieh the fund 'has aecumulated were transferred to the control -of the Fhurch Conimissiouers for England, the new financial body whieh will in future administor the -funds of the Established Ohurch. The fund originated in 1704 when. Queen Anne infofmed the Commons that she proposed to make over her entire revenue from ' ' tenths and iirst f ruits ' ' for the benefit of poor clergy. i Tlie first fruits were the first full year's revenue from any befieficej and the tenths were the tax of one-tenth ot the income of every benefice lritherto due to the Grown. These two ecelesiastical taxes, whieh were paid' to the Fope before the Reformation, ' Wefe seized by Ilenry VIII and used to sweil the Royal revenues. When Queen Anne made her gift the revenue derived from these Taxes was between £16,000 and £17,000 a year.
