Plane with Telephone
WELLINGTON, April 1. Oommenting on the coupling of a* Skymaster aeroplane over the Tasman with the New Zealandxtelephone systeiu by radio-telephone this morning, the Postmaster-General, Mr. Hackett, said the coupling was somewhat of an experiment as far as the Post Offiee wasconcerned. There was no Tegular serviee to either inland' or overseas air routes. Radio telephone calls could, of eourse, be effeeted to a number of overseas countries and to the inter-island steamer Hinemoa during her voyages. Later there would be a similar service to and from the Monowai when.she took up the Tasman run. The calls were handled today, said Mr. Hackett, by the Post Offiee in the same way as ship-to-shore calls. So far there had been no demand for telephone rcervices to aircraft but as passenger air services developed it was anticipated that the demand foT this type of service would arise.
