Conditions Make For High Scoring

A' higli wind and, trieky greens eontributed to.some high scoring' in the i first -two of four rounds for the £7UU victory open golf tournament which began at the Akarana Club's course tohay. Nevertheless the leaders in the resx>ective divigions — L. B. Johnston in the aniateur and A. E. Guy in the prof essional — scored . splendidly. , J ohnston's- rounds of 74 ahd 72 put him six strokes ahead of a strong amateur field which included E. H. ,Glading, national open cliampion, D. L. Woon, New Zealand representative against the Australians last year, P. G. F. Smith, national amateur champion in 1938, and A. E. Kitto, twice runner-up for tne national amateur erown. Guy obtained a lead of four strokes with rounds of 7(3 and 73, the nearest eompctitor being a Queensland professional," V. O. Walker, who played with •great steadiness in only his second day on the course.
