Buckley Golf Club Has Successful Year
The tehth annual mee.ting of the Buckley Golf Club' was Jheld in the Council Chambers, Shannon, on Monday evening, the president, Mr, R. S, Downes, presiding over a "fair attendance. * Among the inward correspondence was a letter from Mr. E. T. Wilson, a former member of ; the club and its secretary for a great number of years. ■ Mr. -Wilson expressed the slncere thanks of both Mrs.. Wilson and himself for the delightful gift and kind expressions voiced by members of the club at the time of their departure from the town. It was brought before the notice of the meeting that Mr. V. Picard, a prominent member of the club, had now left the district and it was resolved that a letter be written to him, wishing him every success in his new venture. It was agreed that when Mr. Picard next visits this town that a social evening be extende'd to him. The resignation of Mrs. C. -M. Crohquest was received with regret. , In presenting his report on the season's activity, the retiring president, Mr. Downes, stated that the: "season. had been' a most successful ohe, both socially and- in . inter-; cluh matches. The . club had acquitted itself very well . in '■matches within- Horewhenua, -and with outside club.s. Most enj.oyable matches were played and the season sa*w visits frorxi the Taihape and Tui Glen Clubs. . • • Making'reference to the ladies" activities, Mr, Downes, stated that all members of the club were very pleased to see the lady members out in full force during the season. The special ladies' day had been a great success and various interclub matches had been played, both at home and on outside links. It was to be hoped that the coming season would see a very strong ladies' club. , Mr. Downes went on to report on the condition of the links and expressed thanks to Messrs Stern Bros. for the amount of work they had put in to keep the links in such good playi-ng order. Thanks were also-extended to the greenkeeper and all others who had helped in many ways to make the season such a success. The president concluded his report by wishing the club every success during the coming season. The balance sheet was -then presented by the acting secretary, Mr. T. S. Downes, and on the motion of Mr. W. C. Higgie, this was^-adop-ted. In moving its adoption, Mr. Higgie extended congratulations' to the club on the past season's activities. • The election of officers for the coming year was then held and the following were elected: — Patron: Mr. J. Stern, Senr.; president: Mr. W. C. Higgie;. vice-president: Mr. J. Chambers; secretary- treasurer : Left vacant with Mr. R. S. Downes acting in the meantime; club captain: Mr. F. Picard; vice-cap-tain: Mr. R. Harding; committee: the president, secretary, club captain, vice-captain and Messrs C. Booker, K. Thomson and D. Purcell, handicap committee: Messrs R. Harding, F. Picard and D. Purcell. On the motion of Mr. H. Karena, it was resolved that the subscriptions remain the same as for the past season, and it was agreed that the club continue with the third party risk insurance, this to be added to the subscription rate. Mrs. H. Pope was appointed as the representative of the ladies' club. • It was agreed that 'the committee discuss the matter of renting the
links with Messrs Stern Bros. Regarding opening day, this was left in the hands of the committee, which will make. the .announcement after carrying olrt an inspection of the links. An ag'reeihent was reaclied regarding certain improvementsto the clubhouse. It was agreed that a working bee endeavour to assist in getting the •links in order over: the Easter holidays. . .. * ; The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
