Visitor's 20 Points For and Against N.Z.
Writing in an Auckland newspaper, under the signature of G.E.G. Devonshire, an English visitor sums up a New Zealand sojourn in the following apt.manner :— "Being ahout to depart for England, wharfies , permitting, may I - submit the attached mental flashes, occurring spontaneously to me, after a most enjoyable six months. in the Dominion: — (1) Most pleasant impressiori: Staeked shelves of ; groceries. (2) Most discussed > people: Wharfies. (3) Most Jrritating eustom: 'Traffic Streams' for walking on pavements in Queen Street. (4) Most strange when driving: Having to park a particular way and having to give. 'stop' sig*nals when in city traffic stream conditions. (5) Most appreciated traffic rul'e: Being permitted to park without lights. (6) Most lax regulations: So many permitted to drive without rear lights) (7) Most budget-assisting: No tipping. (8) Most Complimentary : No beggars. (9) Most shocking: Barefoot children in city streets. (10) Most irritating saying: 'Rangitoto looks the same from wherever you view it.' (11) Most exorbitantly expensive; Radio sets and household utensils. (12) Most joyful task: Detopping the ridh milk for morning 'cuppa.' (13) xMost striking impreSSion: Blinds of all houses perpetually . at half-mast. (14) Most futile law: Oount'er wrapping of bread after so many -persons have handled it already. (15) Most surprising discovery: Persistence of outdated unhygienic selling of unbottled milk by roundsmen. (16) Most painful: Social security. (17) Most „ noticeable: ' Sunshine. (18) .Most unexpected: National Anthem before the show. (19) Most commendable:-. Dominion patriotism. (20) Most stupid; Those- who ■express serious criticism with knowledge which should only result in these flippant notes." •
