G. B. Shaw Would Abolish Homework
Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LONDON, March 11. George Bernard Shaw has achieved fresh farne. 11 e is probably the most popular man in Britain with the children of Bedfordshire and Ilerti'ordshire. Pollov/ing a controversy in the coliunns of the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Express on the question of school homework, the newspaper published an interview with G.B.S. m which he expressed the tollowing views: "Three hours' homework for girls is monstfous. It should be abolished. ^Vhy if school managers required such overtime from the Prime Miiiister or. the Lord Chiei Justice they would he "cbrtified as fit for a mental hospital. Even for a Newton or an Emstein two hours' concentrated mental work daily on four days weekly is enough — and that should he broken by a hc-liday of one month in six. ' ' Mr. Shaw said that in his opinion three out of five secondary schooj children were being ' 'mentaily broken instead of educated.'.1 He said if he were a grammar school teacher he would threaten to murder his pupils if they dared to tihink about lessons out of school.
