Council Attends To General Business
General business pertaining to the administration of the borough was attended to by membefs of the Shannon Borough Council a't tlieir fortnightly ."meeting on Tuesday evening. The.MayQr (Mr.-KD. /A. Fitzgerald) pr'esided' ahd Crs. «-B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, R. S. Downes, L, G- Sayer, C. G. Wishart and H. Aitchison werepresent. An apology for absence was received from Cr. C. M. Cronquest. . • V, v ( . : A letter was receivea from Hhe secretary of the Shannon School Committee asking if thp council could' make arrangements to ;cut the g'rass :i'n' the school playi'ng afea at intervals during the- growing season. On the motion of Cr. Aitchison, it was resolve'd to offer the borough mower to the school committee to be used for this purpose, provided breakages were paid for by the committee. • It was pointed out that the borough staff and liorse were fully occupied 011 borough w.ork. In' reply to a letter from the council, a Masterton firm advised that the library books advertise'd had been sold. The Palmerston North firm from whfch the boi'ough intended to purchase a mowing machine, wrote thanking the council for its order. In regard to the ShannonMangaore main highway, the chairman of the Main Highways Board forwarded an agreement relative to the advance by the board to the council of the share of the cost of reconstructing and seali ing this highway. The agreement ' j provi'des for repayment of the I I advance of £644 in seven equal I annual instalments. It was agreed that the agreement be' signed and the seal of the council be affixed thereto. On the motion of the Miayor it was resolved that tenders be calljed for the renting of the bor'qugh sections for 12 months as from April 1. The sections for tender are se'ction. 289 Vance Street, ' section 322 Nathan Terrace and sec- | tion *340 Nathan Terra'ce. " Cr. : L. . G. 1 feayer gave notice, ( of motion', that the 1 resolution 'passed on February 10^ "that wheh perlhission is granted 1 to l'e^idents to burn ' rubbish ' on. the ' borough stree'ts, they be notifie'd' to Clean'up afterwards," be rescinded. o ■ Cr. Sayer, chairman of the works committee, rreported that he had made. arrangemcnts with the borough forehian to'inspect a flp'me thrower 'when working; and Mr. Wilkinson j would' " la'ter lend. the flame thrower to the council f or work in the borough. Cr. Sayer also stated that he had "discussed with Mr. F. C. Peach* an offer to carry out footpath improvements in Ballance Street,. but further information was require'd. He suggested that prices be obtained for I a suitable material for ' patching streets and footpaths. That repairs jwere necessary to a large water > main along East Road, was also | brought to the notice of the counj cil by Cr. Sayer. Reference was ! made to unsanitary conditions of a i dwelling in Margaret Street, and : the matter was referred to the i health inspector; Cr. B. Clayton, chairman of the domain and cemetery committee, reported that Mr. K. Mitchell, of East Road, ha'd carried out an inspection of the borough beautifying area and would demonstrate the pruning of trees . during this month. Mr. Mitchell had made an offer to donate a supply of shrubs to the council. Cr. Clayton drew attention to the fact that a new gate was required at the cemetery. The committee was authoriSed to have the gate instailed. * - Cr. V. J. Bateman, chairman of the building committee, reported that a hot water service had been instailed in the borough dwelling in Stout Street, and that the work of painting the municipal buildings was in progress. He had carried out an inspection of repair work being done to a local residence and stated that this work was satisfactory. The suggestion that the borough shed be painted was left in the hands of Cr. Bateman to attend to. The passing of accounts amounting to £206 14s 8d terminated the general business of the meeting.
