County Against Grants To Libraries
The Horowhenua Cjounty Council is not in favour of making grants to public libraries. At yesterday's meeting of the council the question of such grants was raised on reeeipt of a letter from the Otaki 'Borough Gouncil, whieh sought a grant for its public library on the grounds that country residents were receiving benefit from the institutiop. Some uniformity of pol'icy was necessary to put the matter on a solid foundation, said Cr. J. H. P. Liggins during discussion. Other councillors expressed' the^ view that if a grant was made" to h one library it would start a deluge ' o'f requests -from all the other libraries in the distribt. The chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, stated that it would cost the eountry about £1200 to £1500 a year to make grants to all the libraries. Following further djscussion, It was agreed that no action be taken on Otaki's letter.
