Intoxicated Car Driver Has Licence Cancelled

Pleading guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a motorc'ar , | • Edwrird ' ; 'Oscar ' ■ ' Gibbins, machi-nist, of Mafton, was'fined £10 and had , his lipence cancelled ■ for 12 ,mqnths . when he appeared jn the 'Police, Court, Levin," yesterday. The 'case '®was heard by Messfs. J. S. Moir and- J. B. Grey, J sfe/s., while Mr. -J. Todd appeared for Gibbins. The charge arose from an accident which occurred about ' 8 pah. on «March 6, Sergeant .WV'Grailiger told' ' ijrie- ribuft. 'A crash occurred and the truck, which was lighted, was pushed forward. Mr. Jones had gone round to the back of the truck to find Gibbins alighting from the car and two of the passengers in it injured. The police and a doctor were sent for, while Traffic Inspector M. Kehoe, who was patrolling the road, arrived on the scene jyst prior to the poiice. The inspector had found Gibbins in a state of intoxication and the doctor who examined him at the scene of the accident certified him as Unfit- to drive. The car had apparently run under the tray of ■tlie truck. For -Gibbins, Mr. Todd said he had been to Petone for a boxing match and was returning to his honie in Marton. He was not accustomed to taking liquor and it had apparently afiected him more than usual. In entering* a conviction vand fixing the penalty," the Bench took into consideration the fact that Gibbins' car had suffered damage approximating £200, and that the msurance cover would be void as a result of the charge. •
