Many Rescues In Heavy Seas At Sydney
_SYDXEY, March 8. Two boatloads of "pirates" were spilled into heavy surf at Tamarania beach, Sydney, and two "ladies of the gay nineties ' ' rescued two girls from drowjiing. The incidents ocx'urred when heavy .seas caused the abandonment of a costumed surf carnival. The "pirates" were members of the Covelly and Bonai Surt Glubs invading the beach, and t«he aneient ladies were tyvo local iitesavers 111 fancy dress. Surfmen sheo their disguises and, in eontmori with colleagues at six other Sydney beaches, did- theirtshare in rescuing from drowning 112 people. X 0 loss of life ocenrred around Syd.ney, but at ATewcastle- beach two vouths were swept off a rock and drowned while 50 people watched helplessly. Lifesavers reeovered the bodies.
