Death Of Seaman From Fail Into Hold

WELLINGTON, March 4. j A falal aecident to a senior ordinary seaman on the Cordillera which arrived in Wellington from the United Kingdom ou yaturdav, occurred at 4 p.m. on Eebruary 10, the victim dying on the morning of Eebruary 14. Between Ihese two times inedical advice was sent to the Cordillera by radio from doctors on other ships crossing the l'acilic. The dead man was Archibald MaeLean, aged IS, born in Barra, Outer liebrides, ycotiand. MacLean fell from between docks to the bottoui of a hold. He was unconscious at the time of his death. A wireless message was sent to all ships requesting medical advice and assistanee. Contact was made with f the i'ort Albany and later with the Rakaia, both ships carrying a doctor. Till thc time of the seaman 's death frequent messages were exchanged, the Cordillera describing his eondition and the ships ? doctors replying with instructions for treatment. On the night of Eebruary 13 the Cordillera altered courso to meet the Rakaia but resumed her vovage to Wellington shortly after MacLean 's death next morning. He was buried at sea that afternoon. The Cordillera 's niaster has made a report on the incident to the Marine Department in Wellington which will forward it to the registrar of sliipping and seamen in Britain.
