Entries 'totalled 331, indicating thai rifle shooting is practically back tp pre 9war strength. The day's programnm consisted of the three-range openiii}: match, 300, 500 and 600 yards (11011championship) and the Wellington match, 500 and 600 yards, wliicli wa": the lirst of the belt series. The Opaki Olub had a double success, H. K. Smith winning the opening niatcli with the good total of 100 (33, 34, 33; and King annexing tlie Wellington match with 94 (48 ancl 46). Other leading scores in 'tlie lirst matcli of the belt series included J. W. fohnson (Featherston) runner-up to King last yeaf, W. J. Burton (Gisborne) who finished fifth and. M. Gordon, the 21-year-old Okawa rifleman who, registered 93. Gordon finished in L9th place for the belt last year. The belt series will be coiitinued tomorrow with the Canterbury (300 apd 500 yards), Otago (300 yards) and'Hawke's 3ay (600 yards) matehes.
