Arising out of a stabbang Incid'ent in. .Symouds fSirect on the evening of Doconiber 3, -Edward George Thomas Broad, aged 21, a baker's labourer, stood trial before Mr. Justico Calian. on two charges. The first chargc was ot attempting to murder Frederick Gcorge Streetoji and the second, an alteruative charge of wounding Streoton with 111tent to do him grievous bodily hann. Mr. Cleal, who conducted the' prosecution, said that about a coupie oi week's before a stabbiug, Htreeton was introduced to accused's vvife as "Betty" in the lounge of an hotel anu he went out swimniing with her and to pictures and dances. Accused gave her perniission to go to a bacli at Long Hay with Streeton understanding that Btreeton's parents would be there. On the night of December 3 accused saw his wit'e and Streeton talking togetiier in Symonds Street. He rcturncd to the house for a sheath knife, approaclied the coupie and after a few wprds witn ' Streeton, 'stabbed him in. the left brcast. Streeton staggered into the passagerfway of a house and collapsed. In a statement to the police accused had said he was v'erv wild when he saw Streeton on December 3 and went aud got a sheath kriife, "a good sharp oue in good order." He did not give "Freddy" much chauce and stabbed him very quickly. He left the knife sticking in him and took his wife inside. He had not intended to use the •knife but just to ' ' f righten '/Freddy." A single man, aged 22, Frederick George Streeton, bufcher, said he met Mrs. Broad by arrangement outside her. lodgings about 9 p.m. on December 3.She wanted h'irn to meet her husband, but he told her he was finished and decided to leave. Until that time he thought she was living by herself. Accused approached-them and asked witness what4 his intentions were as far as Betty was concerned. Witness said he was finished and was ' going. Witness then described the stabbing. In cross-examination witness said that "Betty" had. given him to understand she was li'ving apart from her husband. He denied that he had ea^er been intimate with her. Dr. R. R. Talbot, described Streeton 's condition on admission to the casualty ward as "desperately ill and almost dead from loss of blood. ' ' He responded slowly to a blood transfusion. His Honoiir expressed a desire to k'now who was the officer who was wide awake enough. to realise the position and immediately0 ordered transfusion, thus saving "this young man's life.
