Review of Rangitikei Races

: "Spectator")

(By

A. meritorious win was scored by Sunburn when he won the Rangitikei Handicap at Bulls last Saturday, and in view of this form he holds excellent prospects of making it two-on-end at New Plymouth this week. . Taken to the front early, he made the pace a cracker and held ori gamely when ehallenged by Mesalliance. On graduating from .haek class, Sunburn's first proposition was the Anniversary Handicap on the first day of the Wellington Cup meeting, but the class proved toO rich as on the second day w-hen he le'd for seven furlongs but over the final furlong could not^stay on. The noticeable drop in class was much to his advantage on Saturday with the result • ■ of his ^ success, Mesalliance, Rothnic and The Stormovik being among -those he defeated. In ten starts this season Sunburn has scored four wins and one second. A five-year old chestnut* horse by Sol Oriens from Good Abbes, Sun iZJurn is trained for his owner, Mr. T. Lowry by .Mr. J. Jefferd and Mrs. L. Campbell. Unlucky to meet one so good as Sunburn, - Mesalliance again filled another minor placing, while conceding the winner 221bs. Ridden a good race by the young apprentice,

Red Glare who had his first race this season at Rangitikei, should be in good order for autumn races J. Harris, Mesalliance ran on well under pressure in the straight, but just could not bridge the gap. He is likely to improve to his already consistent record which reads one win, four seconds, and three thirds in twelve starts. The Stormovik ba'dly let down his army of admirers when he could do no better than finish fourth in the big race. It may be wise to give the Broiefort gelding a short spell as he has had a really strenuous season. He has had twenty starts, being in the money ten times. Trained by "his owner, G. Walton, at Otaki, The Stormovik looks like proving one of the best of this stable. A good performer in his 'day, Tranquil Gold is steadily buildirig up a consistent record and it will not be long before she graduates into higher company. Her win on Saturday was well deserved and she is a horse to watch in the near future. Audacious appreciated the drop in class in the Flying Handicap, with the result that she scored a.

■ i stylish win, beating Castlebrae and The Pagan. A graduated hack, Audacious is no mean galloper over six furlongs. She is now owned and trained by J. O'Donnell. -For those few punters who try to catch a big dividend, Theiolight is costing many of them quite a sum, not- to inclu'de the amount lost 'by its connections. In fourteen starts this season, the gr§y has only. one Second to his cre'dit. . ". ' Foxtonian has been unlucky lately, but his tuni will come... His two thirds at Rangitikei .should be remembered. An overdue win was scored by Gynerio in the Pukehou Hurdles on Saturday, and his effort was qiiite promising. Although the Gynerium gelding never proved a reliable performer, he is now at the age where his racing days are numbe'red and he may make this season his most profitable. ' One of the most consistent in racing is Yalta who filled another minor placing when she followed Tranquil Gold and Lady Oratory past the post in the Ngaio Hack Handicap. In Jier last six starts she has scored one win, three seconds and a third. Now trained by W. Young, Yalta is a four-year old mare by Sporting Blood from Mistress Quickly.
