AUDACIOUS TAKES THE SPRINT AT RANCITKEI ' ^ «•» The Rangitikei Racing Club was favoured with gloriously fine weather for the Summer meeting on Saturday and there was a reeord attendance. Good fields paraded; there were many close fmishes ; and there would have been a record totalisator turnover but for the seratching pen which was freely in use because of the hard track. The prineipal raees were won' by Sunburii which was always in front in the Rangitikei Handicap, and by Audacious ' which finished brilliantly t.o head Castlebrae just short pf the post in the open sprint.. • •
(Sevoral surpris'es were recorded during the day. Audacious was at just uuder double ligures, in the Elying Haudicap, Battle On (nearly a quarter of a eentufy) in the Flock House Handicap, and Eiiartl Bay at double ligures in the Trial Plate. Favourites were beaten in all races. The totalisator turnover was £42,763, compared with £30,391 10s last June and £38,836 in November. The February meeting last year was postponed till June because of a storm. The previous totalisator record at Bulls was registered early in Jannary two years ago, when £13,355 10s was handled.
Surprise by Gynerio. The Trentham-tramed Gynerio sprang a mild surprise in the opening event, the Pukehou Hack Hurdies, winning handily from the outsider Timothy anu the win favourite, Rookanui. Tortago led 11 Corona and Itoman Orator past the stands, with Royal fcjward, l udor Ghief, Craveu, Walk 011, Timothy, Tribute, Itockanui and Gvuerio follovv ing. lioniaii Orator 's rider lost an iron and dropped back at the seven, and Timothy movcd up fast to join Koyal Gward, who had taken the lead at the hali'-mile, where Tortago and Tribute were uext and Gynerio makiiig a quick forward move. Gynerio followed Timothy and Royal Sward iuto the straight and then took the lead to run home an easy winner. Timothy beat itockanui by half a Jcngth for second, witii Tribute a fair fourth, ahead of Walk Oif, itoyal Hward and Tortago. Enard Bay Won Well. Gapably handled by the stable apjirenticc, G. Ilulicu, Enard Bay won the Trial Blate at double ligures. iiluniin&lor, a stablemate of the ultimate uinner, -dwelt at barrier-rise, and Nickelby aiul Lioette led out from Determination, Golden Caslcet, Ensign, Enard Bay and Gay Wtitclies. Euarcl Bay improved her posLtion running across the top, but was on the outsido of Betermination and Golden Gasket. who followed Nickelby and Lioette into the straight. Over the linal furlong, Enard Bav linished solidly to win by a ueck from the fast-linisliing Gay Btitches, with Determination only a neck aWay. Ensigu and Nickelby wero almost iu line benind the placegetters, aiid Golden Gasket, Terrilic and Lioette were next to linish. Lackamor linished Solidly. Jn a gi'eat lussle ior the nonours in Ihe Appreutiees ' liack Handicap, Lackamor just beat Eairytime, with the favourite, Kumari, tliird. Eairytime showed out iirst Irom Kumari, Eany Astir, Eackamor, Lady Hilton and Eastern itosc, and at the haJf-nnJe, Lackamor had joined Eairytime, with liastern Koko next, Kuman and Eariy Astir having drop]>ed back. East, erii Kose and Lady Hilton followed l-arry-time anu Lackamor into the straight, but the leaders came on, Eackamor getting Uie verdict by haJf a head from Eairytime, with Kumari a length away, a liead in front of Eady Hilton. Bailor's Gong, West WaJl and Golorado llaid were next to linish. Sunburn Was Never Headed. The liastings-trained imported horse Sunburn Jed all the wuy to win the Kangitikei Handicap riiceJy from Mesalliancc aud an outsider in Kothmc. Passing the stands the iirst time, Sunburn and Kothnic led from Koyal Cambria, Aiosalliance, The .Btormovik, Eairhome, Alorotai and Beau Kaide, with Alright aud Beau Jewel at the rear. Betiu Kaide joined Sunburn crossing Ihe top and tliey tfrrned for home ahead of Kothnic, MesaJliance, Tlie btormovik, Alright and Beau Jewel. In the iiual hundred yards Sunburn came away to win by a length from Mesalliance, who just beat Kothnic by a neck, with The Stormovik a liead away fourth. Tlien camo Beau Kaide, Alright, BecaJm and Fairhome. Tranquil Gold Beat Ladv Oratory.
Trauquil Gold linished too strongly I'or the ratlier weak opposition in the A'gaio Hack Handicap and won nicely from the place favourite, Lady Oratory. Yalta and Ella Shields made most of tlie running from Grand Ail'air and Tranquil Gold, with Eady Oratory next. Tranquil Gold moved up to follovv Yalta and Ella ShieJds across the top and into the straight, and tlien came through to hold oif Eady Oratory by a neck. Two icngtlis back was Yalta, a head in front of Phoenicia, with Grand Affair, Ella ShieJds and Abbey JDuke next. Good Win by Battle On. A rauk outsider in Battle On won the Elock House Hack Handicap to return a dividend just short of a quarter of a century. Conceal jumped out best and led past the stands from Eoxtonian, Elirtatious and Beaulitha. Elirtatious rau into the lead when a rein broke and her rider was unable to conIrol her, the mare being two lengths ahead of Battle On in the back stretch, with Beaulitha, Eoxtonian, Oonceat and Tideen next. Turning into the straight, Battle On ranged u|i to Elirtatious, with Conceal next, and then Battle On came away to win by tlireequarlers of a length from Conceal, with Eoxtonian two lengths away. Elirtatious was fourth and tlien came Sailor's Lass, Tideen aud Ocean Gold. Audacious Finished Brilliantly. ^ Audacious made up a good deal'of ground in the linal stages of the Elying Handicap to win nicelv by a neck from Castlebrae and The Pagan. Tanith assumed the role of pacemaker and was two lengths clear of Tlieioliglit, The Pagan, Elare Path aud Castlebrae as they rau down the back stretch. The Pagan and Castlebrae followed Tanith across the top and into • the straight, with Audacious 'making a move from the rear. Over the last half-furlong, Audacious headed Castlebrae, who had taken the lead, winning by a neek, with The Pagan a length away. Then came .Tanith, Elare Path and Specialist.
Ella Shields Finished Fast. Backers staged a hostile demonstration when Ella Shields, unplaced in the Ngaio Hack, got up in the last few strides to win the Santoft Haek Handicap from Lady Cocoanut, a doublefigure win dividend being . hoisted. Palais Glide carried- the tapes at the tail of the field. Jinny Jinks, Sandy Harrison and Ella Shields were early prominent, and crossing the top, Broielinlc had run up to join Jinny Jinks, with Dickens, Ella Shields, Pihama and Lady Cocoanut next. Broielink was in the lead entering the straight, "with Dickens, Lady Cocoanut and Ella Shields, wide out, finishing fast. Ella Shields caught Lady Cocoanut in the final fifty yards, winning by a liead from Ladv Cocoanut, with Broielink a length away. Then came Dickens, Jinny Jinks, Piko Piko and Celebration.
The judicial committee met to consider the improveinent in the running of Ella Shields and it was announced later that the evidence showed the horse had been run on its merits in both startsj that it had been baeked in the earlier race and that it had been let run for the stakes in the second.
