Atoms To Be Put To Peace--Time Work
' NEW YORK, Feb. 19. The splitting of uraniiun atoms wiU be put to useful peacetime work for the first time in 1949. Contracts are being negotiated for a steam piant that will derive its power from a nuclear pile under construction at Brookhaven, Long IslamL The pro-' ject' will fall far short ?of .competing for ordinary power sources WiU come nowhere near paying for ihe- cost of the pile but since the pile is td 'be built in any case for reseaxch, it waS - , decided to manufacture the power as a product. The splitting uranium atoms will-be eooled by air. The air' thus made hot will be passed throftgii a heat exchanger, boil water and make steam. The steam will generate electricity which will .be'used for driving the cooling fans and other apparatus. The plant's output will be more than 2000 kilowatts, making it a good-sizecl producer of electricai energy since this comes to more than 2500 horsepower.
