Received Thursday, 10.45 a.m,. LONDON, Feb. 18. Mr. Eamon De Valera was defeated in the election for the Eire premiership by 75 votes to 70 and Mr, John Costello, of the Fine Gael party was elected Prime Minister oy 75 votes-to 68. Mr. De Valera in the Dail sat laughing and talking with his colleagues after recording his vote. When figures for the second division, electing Mr. Costello as Premier, were announeed, he showed no disappointment, Mr. De Valera's rivals clapped and cheered when the result of the second division was announeed. An independent member, Mr. Oliver Flannagan, shouted "thanks be to God I have lived to see this day." Several speakers in the Dail, before the divisions were taken, urged Mr. De Valera to drop party politics and join an all-party government.
