Levin Film Society Holds Annual Meeting

The first annual meeting of the Levin Film Society was held in St. Mary's Hall, Levin, on Tuesday night, Mr; J. Todd presiding. The •meeting was well attended, members apparently taking a great deal- of interest in the society's activities. The year had been a successful one, said Mr. Todd in his report to the society. Screenings of .films had been provi'ded for members at fortnightly intervals, there being 18 programmes arranged in all. In addition, the society had been pleased to provide special screenings for various organisations in the Wistrict, a total of seven being given. . - - "Undoubtedly there is a great field for increasing people's knowledge of the world and its _ affairs by means of the movie projector," sai-d Mr. Todd, "and in this respect alone, I feel that the Film Society is in a good position to render a great service to the community." Onev of the committee's more difficult tasks had been that of selecting suitable programmes. Tastes in films varied so much that it. was impossible to- select a programme- of two hours duration which would be heartily approved by the whole audience. The committee had found that a programme containing a wide variety of subjects had been very well received. On the .other hand, full length films occupying the whole evening had heen shown on two or three occasions ' and had been very jnuch appreciated. The committee had taken steps to, hook five programmes for March and Apry of this year as there was a very big demand for the films available from the National Film Llbrary in Wellington. Among thefilms"expected to be screened Were : "Royal Visit to Canada," "Story ofi Molesworth Station," "Liberation !of Rome," "World Garden," "Fightihg La'dy" and "Triumphal March from Aida." The Film Societies of New Zealand were now eombined in an organisation called the New Zealand Film Institute. One of the tasks of the institute was to endeavour to organise the purchase of films to be circulated among the member Societies. The Levin and Invercargill Societies were contributing tow.ards the cost of a film called "Berlin." The film would arrive in the country in a few months time. . The Society's total membership stood -at 79. The average attendance at screenings had been

between 40 and 50. In eonclusion, Mr, Todd extended his thanks to the members of his committee for the work they had done in the past year. The thanks of the Society were also due to the -projectiopists, Messrs. A. B. Coles, J. Tomlinson, L. Lannie and R, Jones, to Mr. W. H. Griffiths for his assistance with the technical work, to Mr. L. Lannie for arranging ® musical programmes with silent films and to Mr. J. E. Fullarton who acted as honorary auditor, The balan.ee sheet showed a profit of • £19 3s 9d on the year's workings. Loaris .raised .to buy 'the Proiectqj. were still oyring jto . ^£1175 {4s*. ' The assets, however, exceeded 'the liabilities by £63 2s ld. Election Of Officers The election of offieers resulted as follows:— President: Mr. J. Todd; vice-president: Mr. A. B. Coles secretary: Mrs. E. Nichol; committee: Mr. J. Tomlinson, Mr. L. Lannie, Mesdames J. Black,- N. A, * Byrne • and Miss Davie and Messrs. J. Tomlinson and L. Lan,nie; auditor: Mr. J. E. Fullarton. After the meeting had closed. two films were screened, "World of Plenty," a film showing the distribution of the world's food supply, an-d "This' is Britain," showing Britain during the war.-
