Use Of Concrete In New Streets Limited A .permit for the construction of concrete kerbing . and, channelling only on streets in new subdiyisions was grante'd, but the construction of concrete footpaths was not approved. This adviee was received from the Building Controller at Monday night's meeting bf the Levin Borough Couhcil in reply to its application. ' This was a most important matter, said the Mayor, Mr. H. B. BUrdekin. The council had adopted a policy which envisaged the building of footpaths irr concrete. • The kerbing and channelling, together with tlie body of the path, would thus be in one piece. A permit had been granted for only the kerbing and channelling to be in "concrete and it was now a question .to de.cide whetjier it would be worthwhile when only part of the work could be done with this ma'terial. The kerbing and channelling could be 'laid and the footpath formed, the concreting of the latter being left until the council- was given a permit for this work also. Cr. F. D. Chainey' suggested that' the council should continue with its proposals for concrete kerbing and channelling, but that chip footpaths be approved - instead of concrete as a permanent surface. He asked what the - difference in cost would be between concrete and asphalt. . • Asphalt would be about £3 cheaper per chain than concrete, replied the borough overseer, Mr. E. Lycette. In view of the shortage ofmaterials, the council decided to relax its policy and allow concrete kerbing and channelling with asphalt .footpaths in certain subdivisions. '
