SURPRISE AT WANGANUI

Voltaic Downs Favourites In Jackson Stakes ; * Owned by Mr. H. C. Collinson, Palmerston North, and trained by G. W. New at Awapuni, Voltaic sprang a surprise * on Saturday when he carried off the honours in the Jackson Stakes, the weight-for-age feature on the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting. He returned a double-figure 'dividend. Robin's Reward followed up his Centennial Cup victory by winning the Earle Stakes, putting up a splendid performance under 9.5. * The open sprint,; the Campbell Handicap, was won by the Woodville owned Petre Mar, also 'an outsider, ap,d four other. Winners were also at double figures including Baby Gay (over a score) and Mister Beau (more than a quarter of a century) . There was anotker great attendance and the weather was perfect, with brilliant sunshine. The traek was fast. Totalisatar investments for the day were £S5,993 10s (a record) compared with £63,738 10s on the seeond day last year. The aggregate for the meeting was £160,807 (also a record for Wanganui), as against £115, 174 10s last year, the increase being £45,632 10s.' Master Guard's Hurdles Tribute, who was made a warm favourite for the Fordell Hack Hurdles, was beaten, out of a dividend place. The earlv ieader, Nancy Bosweli;, t'ell at the second fence and il-Corona was left in i'ront with Glen Urquhart following. Glen Urquhart and Master Guard improved their positious and were .in charge crossing the top. Master Guard jumped to the front at the three furlongs and went on to win by six lengths froin Grand Central with Tortago third, then Tribute and Glen Urquhart. Royal Shar Beats Deseado Many of the competitors in the Sedgebrook Juvenile Handicap had no cliance from" barrier rise. Steilar jumped out well and led Deseado to the straight wliere Deseado took over, but in a liard linish was ruu dowu and beaten a nose by Royal Shar, with Hlue Spec a fair thinl and Steilar, fading, foui'th. Hellewin and Barlous were next. , At Long Odds Master Rich, Sketch, Langspiel, Flare Path, Dun Tara, General Rule and Lady Oratory were the iirst to sliow out from an even dispateh in the Landguard Hack Handicap. Neariug the straight Master Rich led from Eastern Oharm, Lady Oratory, Langspiel and Flare lJath with Baby Gay coming on the outer. Lady Oratory was in charge at the dlstancc but Baby Gay wore her down and won by half a length at odds of over a score. Flare Path was a lengtli and a half away third and Audat cious was fourth. Fine Performance The topweiglil, Robin's Reward, was seen at his best when he won the Farle Stakes aml he received an ovation on returning to scale. Welcome Guest jumped out well and led from Fort Royal, Foxella, Rothnic, Mesallianee. Stony Broke, Selas and Embrolita Along the back there was little change and Robin's Reward was a long wuy back and next the rails. Fassing the half Fort Royal rau up to Welcome Guest with Mesallianee, Foxella and Stony Broke next and Robin's Reward improving his position. Stony Broke moved round the leaders on the outer and took charge at the distanee but in the run liome Robin's Reward linished solidly 011 the outer and in a liard linish won by a neck f'roiu Stony Broke, who beat Yasda by the sauie luargia. Al eaalliunce was a fair fourth, followed by Linbrolita, Rothnic, Foxella, Catterick Bridire and Carmelita.

Boil-over in Stakes The Jackson Stakes produced a great boil-over when Great Trek, Sleepy Fox and Majesty all failed. Sleepy Fox led to the straight from Wild Note and Majesty with Aggravation at the rear. Wild Note passed Sleepy Fox as tliey were straiglitening up ior the liiial ruu. Voltaic lield on to win by a neck from Aggravation ' with Wild Aute half a length awav third and Great Trek tourth. Sleepj /Fox and Majesty were together last but close up. Farrell, carried olV the trainer's trophv attached to the Harrisou Hack Handicap when Mister Beau wou at long odds from twc other outsiders in Cullodeu Moor and Ball'les Rex. Conimercial led out of the straight from Molly Adair, Horouta Begtule and Avenger, with Mister Beau and Ball'les Rex at the rear. Down the oaclt Conimercial stil] lield charge, with little change in the order of the others, uut Mister Beau and Baii'ies Rex wero improving their positious. Mister Beau followed Conimercial and Foxtonian into the straight, took charge at the distance and won 'Mufortably by a length from the fast-linishing Culloden Moor and Ball'les Rex, who were separated by a liead only. Harnbridge came liome well for fourth ahead of Foxtonian, with White Ciill's, Sir Denzil and Incideut close up. Ella Shields Handily Another surprise was t'ortheoming in the Alatarawa Hack Handicap, in which the Wanganui-trained Ella Shields .'.corcd handily from Franada and Lady Merit. At the half-mile Piko Piko had charge from Currency Lass, Karly Astir, Travel King, Franada, Lady Merit and ElJa Shields. Currency Lass took over to lead Travel King, Piko Piko, FVanada and Ella Sliieids into the straight, but Ella Shields iinislied solidly to have coniiuand in thq last half- -furlong and win by a eouple of lengths. Franada got tli rough i ir the iinal stages to beat Lady Merit by half a length for second a place. Gay Joy was fourth, just ahead of Piko Piko, Susau Lee and EaJHy Astir. Flare Path bled, as also did Gay Slipper, who ivas pulJed up. Winner Prom Woodville Outsider but oue in the Campbell Handicap, the Woodville-owned Petre .Mar led all the way to win narrowly from Park Royal and ' Lord Theio.
