The niotion, whieh I'ollowed a recent similar sujigestion in Wellington, was moved hy the Dejuity-Mayor, Mr .T-. L. Cnakiey. "I think 1 am right in saying this matter was cnnsidered by the i-ouncil some years ;igo but it was de-i-ided :it that time not to jirnceed with it," said A1 r Coakley. "The Wellington City Council has already deeided to applv to have the status of the May oioi' Wellington r;i ised to Lord Mayor. I wouhl like to point out that on April 1, 1!)47, the population of Wellington City was 127,000 and the population of Auckland City was 12S,.'10(). Irrespective of the deeision of the Wellington city (Council, I consider the status of Mnvor of Auckland should be raised to that of Lord Mayor." "I will oppose the niotion," said Mr! F. N. Ambler. "I do not think the j city is liig enough for us to be called Lord Mavor aiul Aldermen. After all it is only a verv small city and this motion is a bit earlv. It is all right for hig places like London, JMelbourne and Sydney. ' ' The Mayor, Mr Alhim, interposed, ihat the poyuilation *of the city of Hydnev was less than that of the city of . Auckland. The motion was earried with two dissentlents.
