New Bowling Club For R.S.A. Members Only
That the proposed Levin R.S.A. Bowling Club would be open for financial members of the' " R.S.A. only, was the deeision made by the special sub-committee set up by the bowling committee to draw up the rules for the new club. - This was revealed at a meeting of the® R.S.A. executive On WednesdsSy night when the rules, were submitted for the executive's approval.. A' member of the sub-committee, ' Mi\ A. T. Fletcher, who is also an executive member, commented . that when the matter came up for1 discussion ' at the sub-committee meeting, there wa ssome dissension over this rule, but that the majority -had favoured , conflning the menibership to. R.S.A- .. persoiinel . -
The feeling was that, the idea of the club was to bring, members to- 1 gether sociafly and to create a "reunion" atmosphere. It was consid;ered that about 70 members would i be necessary to bring about the (suCcessful functioning of the club and it was thought that-little difficulty would be experieneed in getting this number from within the ranks of financial members of the R.S,A. If this was found to be ( impossible then consi'deration could then be given to allowing honor, ary membership. ■ The chairman, Mr. N., M. Thom- ; son, commented that a 100 ' per cent. membership of R.IS.A. players would certainly carry more weight i insof ar as the granting of ' a grant ; from the J. R. McKenzie Trust was iconcerned, but that in making a I deeision this factof, togethef Wit'h i co'nsiderati'on to other possible Isources of finance, should not be lallowed to sway the club one way ' or the other. j It might be that, by conflning | members to returned servicemen, ithe club would face a charge of ; selfishness, but no more than any ! other private organisation which j had clubs exclusive to its members. jAnother point was that by making membership ,open to any person jwho had served in the forces, a : difficulty in administration might ; arise as it would be a big- task to jinvestigate each applieatihn as to | proof of service. A second factor l was the 'difficulty in appointing ■ members as only a limited number ; would be required. After further discussion it was agreed that the | executive approve of the sub-com- ( mittee's rule on membership ahd a jmotion was passed to that effect. • j At the meeting it was also decidied that the next quarterly meeting jof the R.S.A. would be held on iMarch 3.
